dc.description A variety of literature has been produced discussing the connection between reading—writing abilities and speaking—listening abilities. The current research examines techniques aimed directly at developing speaking and writing abilities in adult second language learners. A survey was conducted to query whether a relationship exists between the development of speaking and writing skills in adult second language learners. 181 students from the first four semesters of language study in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish answered questions about their preferred method of communication, the focus of their class, their personality, and specific learning strategies used in their classes. The survey showed a marked preference for written communication over oral communication without regard to class focus or personality. Professor surveys concurred that students in the first four semesters of language study generally have slightly stronger writing skills than speaking skills.
