Description:
An agreement (elsewhere cited as the "Repatriation of Refugees Agreement -- 1978)") between the governments of Burma and Bangladesh, signed by the leaders of their respective delegations [Tabarak Husain, Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, and U Tin Ohn, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Burma] on 9th July 1978, after bilateral negotiations conducted in Dhaka. The agreement (labelled "secret" but released for scholarly use to Princeton University Library in 2014 by the Director General for South East Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh) describes how the two countries will repatriate each other's residents, including legal and illegal immigrants crossing the border. It also deals with agreed methods for resolving other border issues between the two countries, such as setting markers and redrawing official border maps, border ground rules, land and maritime borders, etc. (The document appears to be a typed transcript of the original signed agreement, rather than a scan of the original itself. The names of the signatories are transcribed, but the signatures themselves do not appear.) NOTE: it is not clear if the verbatim repetition of text in sections 3 ("Land Boundary") and 4 ("Naaf River Section of the border") is the result of a transcription error, or appeared this way in the original.
